Happy Pongal Festival 2023 – Significance, Story behind Festival of Pongal, Quotes

Pongal is an Indian harvest festival that is held in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. This harvest festival lasts for four days, from January 15th to January 18th, 2023. Pongal is one of the most well-known Hindu holidays. It is celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Sri Lanka, as well as by Tamil people in Malaysia, Mauritius, the US, South Africa, Singapore, the UK, and Canada. It is mostly a day of giving thanks to nature, farmers, and other people.

Pongal takes place in the Tamil month of Thai (January–February), which is the harvest time for rice, cereals, sugar cane, turmeric, and an important ingredient in Tamil cooking.

The six-month journey of the sun north begins with the Pongal Festival (the Uttaraayanam). The main reason for this four-day harvest festival is to thank the Sun God for a good harvest.

Four Days of Pongal 2023

The first day of the four-day Pongal festival in 2023 is called Bhogi Pongal. People think that this festival is held in honor of Lord Indra because, without him, there would be no rain and no farming. People believe that at the end of winter, when a big fire is lit and old, useless things from the family are put on it, other girls dance and sing around the man who started the fire.

Day 1 Bhogi festival

On the second day of the Four Days of Pongal 2023 festival, Lord Surya, who is the guardian of the world, is worshipped. Lord Surya is worshipped by making rice and milk custard in an earthen pot. Then, Lord Surya is given the food from this kheer. Aside from this, people in South India traditionally give Lord Surya sugarcane, coconut, and banana. On this day, a picture of Lord Surya is drawn on a kolam, which is a wooden post.

Day 2 of Pongal

In this situation, the third day of the Four Days of Pongal 2023 festival is called Mattu Pongal. On Mattu Pongal, cows are worshipped. On this day, all of the cattle except for the cow are decorated with beads, bells, grains, and flower garlands, and they are fed as a way to worship them. This festival has a lot of different events, like the bull run.

Day 3 Maattu Pongal

On the fourth day of Pongal, we celebrate Kannum Pongal as part of the Four Days of Pongal 2023 festival. And everyone in the family and society can wash a turmeric leaf and eat the sweet Pongal that was left over from the day before with sugarcane and banana.

Pongal 2023 Festival Details

Based on what we’ve learned from ancient texts, we know that Lord Shiva gave his bull the name Basava, which is part of a well-known legend about the Pongal festival (see “Pongal 2023” for more information). He was sent to tell the people on earth something, and that something was that they should take a bath every day after massaging themselves with oil and then only eat.

When Nandi Maharaj came to Earth with this message, he got it wrong, according to information about the Pongal 2023 festival. He said people should only take it once a month. Lord Shiva was very angry with Basava’s actions because he sent the wrong message. Then he told the bull to help the farmer with his farming at the farmer’s house. Since then, bullocks have been used to do farm work. Since then, the people of South India have celebrated Pongal with a lot of pomp.
