Apple has announced a date for its major Apple September Event, which will reveal the iPhone 14 on September 7. But with just a week until the big reveal, we already know exactly what to expect thanks to a continuous stream of iPhone 14 speculations.
The regular iPhone 14 should resemble the iPhone 13 to some extent, while we anticipate some improved features and specifications compared to the existing variants. In addition to the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max (or iPhone 14 Plus) with many of the same specifications is likely to be released.
The iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to include a more extensive redesign, eventually doing away with the iconic display notch in favor of a new cutout design. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are also expected to feature an upgraded 48MP main camera, a new A16 Bionic CPU, and perhaps an always-on display.
iPhone 14 Design
Thanks to renderings published by leaker Jon Prosser, we’ve been hearing hints of a design change for some iPhone 14 models since last year, just before the iPhone 13 launch.
The ordinary iPhone 14 should resemble its predecessor in terms of appearance; however, the iPhone 14 Pro variants are expected to have a somewhat different design.
The display notch is expected to be removed from the Pro versions in favor of two cuts, one for the front camera and the other for the Face ID sensors. But all of this can turn out to be false—sort of.
iPhone 14 Display
A change to the iPhone 14 lineup is expected; according to reports, the basic iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will have 6.1-inch displays, while the iPhone 14 Max/Plus will feature a 6.7-inch screen with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This implies the end of the 5.4-inch iPhone mini.
According to a Shadow Leaks report, the iPhone 14 will have a 6.08-inch (rounded to 6.1-inch) screen, while the iPhone 14 Max would have a 6.68-inch screen (rounded up to 6.7 inches). The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max also have that. The Pro models, however, may be getting a little bit bigger (to 6.12 inches and 6.69 inches, respectively), maybe due to redesigned bezels.
Given that the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max feature displays with 120Hz refresh rates, it would be amazing to see all iPhone 14 models have screens with similar refresh rates. These screens would probably be made with LTPO panels or the development of those panels that could scale down to 1Hz.
The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to have an always-on display thanks to this utilization of panel technology. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPhone 14 Pro will finally get the always-on display that has been long rumored to be coming to the next generation of iPhones. This display will be used to display “weather, calendars, stocks, activities, and other data” on the lock screen while maintaining a low refresh rate to conserve battery life.
iPhone 14 Colors
According to one source, the standard Midnight, Starlight, and Product RED color selections will still be available, but a lighter sky blue will replace the present blue.
Regarding the iPhone 14 Pro, a Chinese leaker said that this year’s new color option would be dark purple in addition to the traditional Graphite, Silver, and Gold Pro iPhone colors.
We recently got a second glimpse at the purple color and a new blue tint that is noticeably darker than previous blue hues used in past iPhones thanks to a leak purportedly showing real-life photographs of an iPhone 14 Pro, or at least a dummy unit of it.
Meanwhile, eight different colors are displayed on leaked iPhone 14 cases. While these leaks don’t cover official cases, considering how case makers like their designs to complement phones, the colors could provide an extra signal as to which path Apple will follow with the iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 Final Observation
Prior to the September 7 Apple event, we are still dealing with rumors and suspected leaks, but we already have a very decent notion of what to expect from the iPhone 14 range.
The iPhone 14 Pro is most likely to receive all the notable upgrades; see our early comparison of the iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. the iPhone 13 Pro Max for more information. Both the standard and Pro models will improve upon what has gone before.
However, given that the normal iPhone 14 models are still very likely to provide a fantastic iOS experience, they shouldn’t be discounted either. iPhones are built to last.
